Hezekiel’s Wish
Once upon a time, in the thick, rich earth, was a rabbit named Hezekiel. Hezekiel was no ordinary rabbit, for by day he followed the way of other bunnies of this time and place, but by night he was like a magic poppin’ seed, scurrying up and down the sides of trees, investigating the undersides of lily and rose petals, scampering over moonlit meadows and hopping over fences into heavily secured yards. You see, Hezekiel was on a divine mission to tell tales about the Earth’s secrets and for this he had much information to gather.
One night while he was dancing about, a wise old owl stopped him with a question.
“Who . o . o . o ?!?!?”
“What?!?” responded the disconcerted rabbit.
“No, who . o. o !!!” repeated the quizzical owl.
“What do you mean’who’? asked the bunny. “I’m to work on solely the ‘what’ of this divine mission, not the ‘who’!!!”
“But who . o . o . o are you going to tell your tale to, and how will you know when this is supposed to take place?!?!?”
“Hmm . . . I never thought about that,” said the rabbit, scratching his head. “I suppose I’ll know that the way I know everything else, by the twitch of my whiskers.”
“Are you sure?” intoned the owl.
“Well, no,” Hezekiel responded. “But what else do I have to go by?!?!?”
“You could ask the Source of your mission.”
“Oh, no! I couldn’t do that!”
“Why not? Who . o . o else would know better, or have more of a vested interest in sharing this information with you?!?!?”
So the two chose to set out together for the home of the Goddess. And very fine traveling companions they made, too. For wherever Hezekiel could not travel himself, despite all his magical capacities, the owl could carry him a short ways by holding Hezekiel’s neck carefully in his mouth. They were making great speed when they came upon a turtle.
“Where are you two going in such a hurry?” drawled the turtle.
“To the Source of all the Earth’s riches, the home of the Goddess herself,” they answered.
“Well, you can’t get there without me, you know. I’m the only one able to cross the oceans between here and there with both an owl and a rabbit on my back. The two agreed upon the practicality of this, as the sun was beginning to come up over the horizon, making the owl feel sleepy and Hezekiel was more than aware of the precariousness of being carried in the mouth of a sleepy owl over such a long distance, and the slim chance of his survival if he were inadvertently dropped in the ocean. So the two thanked the turtle for his offer and climbed onto his back.
And so this fine trio bobbed upon the water, traveling three days and three nights at breakneck speed for the turtle, for at times they used the owl’s wings like sails, helping them take best advantage of the winds and currents. On the night of the third day, they came to a small island and settled into a cave near the shore, for there were signs of a storm brewing.
“Gee willigers!” exclaimed Hezekiel. “I sure hope we get through this okay!”
Waves had begun to pound against the side of the cave as lightning crackled against the sky. Deafening thunder filled their ears. It was a time of soul searching for Hezekiel and his two friends, as each questioned the wisdom of the choices that had led them there.
Eventually the storm died down and a misty sunlight began to fill the sky, ending their sleepless night. A soft breeze entered the cave, beckoning them to come outside. Dazedly, the three shuffled outdoors, then started at the scene before them. What had appeared to be a barren and deserted beach was now alive with color and sound, large trees and leafy vines. Flaming red and vibrant blue birds called to one another from the treetops in jangled voices. Blossoms of every hue surrounded the small clearing in which Hezekiel, Ogden Owl and the turtle found themselves. In short, the small island had turned into a tropical rainforest overnight.
Just when the three were beginning to breathe normally again, they heard a crashing sound, followed by a female voice lilting with love and mystery.
“Welcome to my home!” rang out her greeting. “I am most pleased by your choice to meet with me.”
The three rubbed their eyes in amazement. For right in front of them had materialized a gigantic female form that seemed to be made of changing rays of jeweled light. And from this presence came a raw, life-force energy that continuously altered its expression from playfulness to majesty to primal power to tenderness.
“Wow!” Hezekiel’s exclamation came out as a whisper. “I didn’t know it would be like this, that you would be like this. I . . I . . . don’t know what to say,” he faltered.
“Dear rabbit, you need not be afraid of my omniscious presence. For I am as I am, just as you are as you are, perfectly yourself in every cell and fiber of your Being. May I anoint you three in the ways of the Goddess, so that you might flow more comfortably with this experience?”
They all nodded eagerly, for they were more than intrigued by the beauty and mystery they perceived.
A fine mist began to form around them, enveloping them in tiny beads of iridescent softness. They each felt something relax inside them, while simultaneously noticing their cells were pulsing and vibrating with new life.
When the Goddess spoke again, it was as if her voice came from deep inside their own Being, and reverberated through them.
“Yes, that is much better. Now then, how would you like me to help you with your mission, Hezekiel, dear one?”
“I’m most impressed by these surroundings,” began Hezekiel. “I’ll make sure to add them to my report. But as Owl so wisely pointed out to me, exactly with whom and when shall I share this report once complete?”
“Your report can never be complete, Hezekiel-Bunny, because Earth’s secrets are constantly growing and changing, just as I am and you are. However, there are several key points you can notice at certain plateau times and these are as follows:
When someone looks you full in the eye, reaching towards your Soul, tell this one of your report and see how they respond. If they remain open and interested, proceed. If not, let it be.
If something awakens you in the middle of the night, causing you to venture from your warren, trust that it is I, calling you forward to new aspects of your mission.
If you discover a group of beings dejected with the present state of their community, share with them your version of this report.
When you arise in the morning, breathe in the air from each direction – North, South, East, West, Above, Below and Within – and notice if any are calling you towards them.
And finally, shortly before going to sleep at night, call upon me to seed your dreams with all the awareness and information you need to help you succeed in your chosen ‘profession’."You have chosen well, dear Hezekiel-bunny, in all that has brought you forth here to me today. May all the treasures of Heaven’s Earth be yours to enjoy forever.”
And with that the Goddess scooped Hezekiel up into her glowing energy field and sent her sparkling rays swirling through his life-force system ‘til the two patterns danced together like dolphins in the surf. By the time Hezekiel was returned to the ground, the edges of his ears were radiant with light and his eyes had turned to brilliant black fire. He was more than blissed out, to say the least!
When Hezekiel was able to speak again, he cried a strange cry, eerie and atonal, with a shifting pitch, bringing owl and turtle back to their senses. The three then bowed to the Goddess, committing themselves anew to Her service with reverence and awe. A smile glistened amid the changing rays of light, as She promised each of them that they would now consciously experience Her presence in all things forevermore and that this would shift the awareness of all those they met. Then she swept them up on a soft, soft breeze, and sent them safely back across the oceans to their starting point together.
It was many days before the three were able to speak of their tale to anyone else. In fact, they tell me this is the very first time. Since then, they have always remained aware of the all-pervading presence that guides this Earth, and they have asked me to ask you to do so as well.
